Compliance Tips for Boosters

A Representative of Athletics Interests (Booster) is any individual who has:

  • Made any type of financial contribution to the Linfield athletics department or booster organization.
  • Assisted in recruiting a prospective student-athlete.
  • Participated in/is a member of any agency or organization promoting the athletics program.
  • Assisted in providing benefits directly to enrolled student-athletes or their families.
  • Been involved otherwise in promoting the institution's athletics program.
  • Once booster status is established, individuals retain that identity indefinitely.

Boosters CAN:

  • Contribute funds to support a particular sport.
  • Call the compliance office to request student-athletes speak at charitable or education functions.
  • Notify coaching staff of outstanding prospective student-athletes.
  • Notify head coaches or the athletic department of job possibilities for student-athletes.
  • Pay student-athletes for work actually performed and at a rate commensurate with the going rate for similar services.
  • Continue established relationships.

Boosters CANNOT:

  • Provide a student-athlete, or his/her family, complimentary tickets to a Linfield sporting event.
  • Provide tickets or transportation for high school, prep school, or community college coaches at any location, at any time.
  • Contact a prospective student athlete on or off campus.
  • Contact an enrolled student-athlete at another institution for the purpose of encouraging their transfer to Linfield and participation in our athletic programs.
  • Pay or offer to pay for registration fees for summer sports camps for a prospect.
  • Contact the prospect's coach, principal, or counselor for the purpose of evaluating the prospect.
  • Invite selected high school or community college prospective student-athletes to alumni events.
  • Employ or arrange for the employment of a prospect or an enrolled student-athlete without first checking with the compliance office.
  • Provide transportation for prospects or student-athletes in your employment unless transportation is provided for all other employees.
  • Provide a prospective student-athlete or student-athlete with extra benefits such as money, movie passes, free restaurant meals, long distance charges, or free or reduced housing.
  • Provide preferential treatment or discounted professional services (e.g. legal, medical) because of a student-athlete's athletics reputation or payback potential as a professional athlete.
  • Pay a student-athlete's expenses or loan a car to the student-athlete for use to any destination, for any reason, including personal reasons or to receive an athletics-related award.
  • Provide the family or friends of student-athletes with transportation or housing expenses to visit an enrolled student-athlete or attend an away-from-home contest.
  • Provide a student-athlete with an award or gift for his/her athletics participation, even after the student-athlete's graduation and exhaustion of eligibility.
  • Employ a student-athlete or use his/her picture or name for the purpose of directly advertising, recommending or promoting a commercial product or service.
